Congruence: A Polyvagal Perspective

$175 online | $325 in-person

Join Peggy for an immersive journey that provides a framework for understanding the impact of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) on emotional regulation, behavior, and social dynamics and how it relates to the concept of congruence—aligning our internal experiences with our external expressions.

The course delves into the three states of the ANS—social engagement, fight or flight, and shutdown—through interactive exercises, discussions, and practical applications to recognize physiological responses, cultivate self-regulation, and enhance the capacity for connection and resilience.

Our in-person course blends theory with experiential activities, tapping into the innate sensitivity of our equine partners to illuminate Polyvagal concepts. Participants engage in ground-based exercises, observing and regulating their autonomic responses alongside the Congruence Herd. No horse experience necessary.

May 7 - June 11 | Tuesdays 5:30pm - 7:00pm MST (online)

May 18-19 | 9:00am - 2:00pm MST (in-person)

The lived experience is rooted in the autonomic nervous system.

Our autonomic nervous system is always acting in service of our survival. It governs the activities of our internal organs, regulates our heartbeat, controls our breath patterns, manages blood pressure, and oversees digestion and metabolism. Its primary function is to store, conserve, and release energy to support us in our daily lives.

The ANS also plays a pivotal role in shaping our perceptions of safety and connection. The “state = story” concept underscores the intricate relationship between our physiological states and the narratives we construct about ourselves and our experiences. For example:

  • In a state of social engagement, we are more likely to perceive situations positively and construct narratives that emphasize connection, empathy, and cooperation.

  • In a state of fight or flight, our perceptions may be colored by fear or defensiveness, leading to narratives focused on threat, competition, or survival.

  • In a state of shutdown, our ability to process and make sense of our experiences may be compromised, leading to narratives that may be fragmented or disconnected.

Recognizing the interplay between our physiological states and narratives empowers us to shift our system from survival mode to a state of safety and connection. In this regulated space, we can access our authentic selves and recognize our interconnectedness with self, others, nature, and the spiritual realm.

In-Person Immersion

Our in-person course offers a transformative journey into understanding the nervous system's dynamics through interactions with the Congruence Herd. This immersive course blends theory with experiential activities, leveraging the innate sensitivity of horses to teach Polyvagal concepts. Participants engage in ground-based exercises, observing and regulating their autonomic responses alongside equine partners. Through reflective practices and group discussions, attendees deepen their understanding of nervous system regulation and emotional resilience. By bridging Polyvagal Theory with equine-assisted activities, participants gain practical tools for self-regulation, interpersonal connection, and holistic well-being, fostering profound personal growth. Perfect for those who prefer a concentrated, collaborative learning environment. In-person offerings also include light plant based snacks and lunch.

FAQs

Who should take this course?

This course is suitable for anyone interested in understanding and improving their relationship with their nervous system. It's beneficial for individuals seeking to enhance their mental well-being, emotional regulation, and interpersonal connections as well as enhance their understanding of other practices such as meditation, mindfulness and yoga.

Is any prior knowledge required to take this course?

No prior conscious knowledge is required. The teachings are accessible for all individuals as the wisdom lies within each one of us. This course is designed to facilitate the return to that innate wisdom no matter how far below the surface it lies.

What is the polyvagal theory?

Polyvagal Theory, conceived by Stephen Porges, PhD, illuminates how the autonomic nervous system, notably the vagus nerve, shapes health, behavior, and social interactions. The theory provides an understanding of how the autonomic nervous system responds to stress and trauma. By recognizing the role of the vagus nerve in regulating physiological and emotional states, you can develop and enhance your practices that promote safety, connection, and regulation, which are essential for healing from trauma and restoring overall well-being.

How is this relevant to healing?

Understanding the polyvagal theory reveals how our nervous system responds to stress and trauma, offering practical techniques for regulation. By engaging the ventral vagal system while soothing the sympathetic and dorsal vagal systems, individuals can enhance self-regulation, emotional resilience, and social connections, leading to greater well-being.

What topics are covered in this course?

Our course covers topics such as the neurophysiology of the autonomic nervous system, the three hierarchical systems of the autonomic nervous system (ventral vagal, sympathetic, and dorsal vagal), the role of the vagus nerve in social engagement and emotional regulation, practical techniques for regulating the nervous system, and applying polyvagal principles in your daily life for health and well being.

What experiential activities are included in a polyvagal workshop?

Our course includes a variety of experiential activities such as grounding and orienting, somatic awareness, guided meditation, diads and group discussion. The herd will take part in activities in our in person course. Participation is always at the discretion of the participant.

Do I need horse experience for the in-person course?

No previous horse experience is necessary. You will be guided into connection with the herd at your own pace. The degree of participation with the herd is at the discretion of the participant.

What if I can no longer attend?

Cancelation is allowed up to 24 hours prior to the courses start date. Once the course has started, cancellation is no longer allowed.
