Wildness is a necessity
— John Muir
In encounters with both humans and animals, sentient beings offer profound opportunities for growth, healing, and deeper understanding. At Congruence, the herd serves as wise and willing teachers — guiding us into grounding, presence, resourcing, and sensory awareness. Their responses invite self-awareness and help us come into deeper relationship with our lived experience.
Recognizing the vital role the horses play in human healing, we prioritize their well-being in every aspect of sanctuary life. Inspired by the Paddock Paradise system, the herd has ample space to move and the freedom to graze throughout the day. They are nourished with organic whole foods and supported with a low-sugar, low-starch diet to maintain metabolic health. Our horses are barefoot, trimmed regularly to mirror natural wear and encourage healthy soft tissue — just as they would in the wild.
Care for the herd extends beyond the physical. Each horse receives regular support for their physical, emotional, energetic, and spiritual well-being. This includes bodywork, energy work, and practices that align with the rhythms of the land and the seasons.
All of our offerings begin with an understanding of the mammalian nervous system — both human and equine. This foundation allows for meaningful, respectful communication with the herd, rooted in attunement and mutual consent. By honoring the nervous system, we create a shared language of safety, connection, and presence between species.
Our commitment to the herd’s welfare is not separate from our work — it is the work. It reflects the reciprocity at the heart of every session, every encounter, and every step taken on this land.
While Congruence is not a nonprofit, each session directly supports the care of the herd and the sanctuary. This work exists to nourish both humans and horses — and your participation helps sustain that relationship.
