A holistic approach to horse care

When Roxy first came into my life, my understanding of horse care was limited. As the herd grew, so did the complexity of their needs. I quickly recognized that each horse required individualized support — physically, metabolically, and emotionally.

Managing conditions such as Cushing’s disease, insulin resistance, dental imbalances, and hoof rehabilitation required a comprehensive and coordinated approach. Over time, I came to understand that the foundation of effective care — for horses and humans alike — is nervous system stability.

Just as I learned in my own recovery from traumatic brain injury, safety and predictability are not luxuries; they are prerequisites for regulation and healing.

At Congruence, the herd lives in an environment designed to support physiological balance. We prioritize consistent routines, species-appropriate nutrition, movement, and a collaborative team of practitioners who address structural, metabolic, and regulatory needs.

Through ongoing education, careful observation, and listening to the horses themselves, an aligned and reliable model of care has emerged.

In gratitude, we share the practitioners and resources who continue to support the physical and emotional well-being of the Congruence Herd.

Nervous system regulation —

All aspects of our care are built on the foundation of nervous system stability. When a horse’s autonomic system is chronically activated, physiological resources are directed toward protection rather than repair.

By supporting regulation through predictable routines, appropriate nutrition, movement, and low-stress handling, we create conditions that allow the body to allocate energy toward tissue repair, metabolic balance, and structural recovery.

A regulated nervous system supports resilience, adaptability, and overall well-being. Our approach prioritizes this stability as the foundation upon which all other healing processes depend.

Barefoot hoof care —

Understanding hoof care has been one of my most significant learning curves. I rely fully on David Landreville and his apprentice, Marlene Castillo-D’Amico, for the ongoing rehabilitation and structural integrity of the Congruence herd. David has been building hooves in collaboration with horses for over two decades, often restoring soundness in cases others would not take on.

Through their expertise, patience, and consistency, horses with complex distortion and metabolic challenges have been guided back toward functional, resilient hooves. Everything I understand about hoof rehabilitation has been shaped by their mentorship and hands-on care.

Depending on individual needs, trims occur every two to four weeks to allow gradual structural change while prioritizing comfort.

Healthy hoof function depends on more than trim and terrain. A horse whose nervous system is chronically activated directs physiological resources toward protection rather than repair. Stress can influence circulation, inflammation, tissue quality, and the ability to organize comfortably during trimming.

Their approach prioritizes structural balance alongside nervous system stability. Trims are paced to support comfort and cooperation rather than force. Predictable handling and low-stress environments allow the horse to remain regulated throughout the process.

When a horse can stand, move, and load weight evenly without discomfort, the autonomic system no longer needs to organize around guarding or bracing. Sound foot health reinforces balance not only structurally, but neurologically.

Holistic care —

Our holistic approach encompasses a range of modalities including acupuncture, homeopathy, herbal medicine, and other whole food dietary adjustments. These practices aim to address the root causes of health issues, strengthen the immune system, and promote overall wellness. By reducing stress, supporting proper nutrition, and optimizing organ function, we enhance the horse's natural healing processes and contribute to their longevity and vitality.

Energetic bodywork —

We employ diverse holistic practices to harmonize the energetic systems of horses, fostering their overall well-being. Techniques like Reiki, tuning fork therapy, and the Masterson Method are utilized to release blockages, restore harmony, and bolster the horse's innate healing capabilities. All methods prioritize operating within a regulated nervous system, ensuring optimal healing outcomes. These gentle and non-invasive modalities have effectively alleviated physical discomfort, diminished stress, and cultivated vitality and emotional equilibrium.

Modalities and tools used for energy work include:

Plant Medicine —

We use plant medicine to support their health and well-being through the use of herbs, flower essences, and other natural remedies. By harnessing the healing properties of plants, such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and calming effects, we can address various physical and emotional issues in horses. We use whole organic herbs only for maximum effectiveness and source from reliable and sustainable resources. We incorporate other organic superfoods and seeds depending on the horse’s individual needs.

Sources include:

Free choice hay —

We provide free-choice hay to more closely mirror natural grazing behavior and support nervous system stability. When forage is continuously available, horses are less likely to compete or anticipate feeding times, which can reduce stress-related activation and support lower cortisol levels.

Steady access to fiber promotes consistent digestive motility, decreasing the risk of colic and gastric ulcers. Ongoing forage intake also supports a balanced gut microbiome, contributing to nutrient absorption and overall metabolic health.

To encourage movement and distribute grazing patterns, approximately ten feeding stations are positioned throughout the property using half- and full-bale slow-feed bags. Hay pillows are primarily used for the mini horses.

Allopathic medicine —

When diagnostic evaluation, medical intervention, or ongoing management is required, we partner with Dr. Lindsay Smogor and the team at Jackpot Veterinary Center.

Their clinical expertise, responsiveness, and deep familiarity with the herd ensure that each horse receives attentive, individualized care. We value their thoughtful approach and their ability to address both the physical and behavioral nuances that arise in complex cases.
